What does it mean to be MOS Certified?

One of the many great opportunities that KidsTek provides to our high school students is the chance to take Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certifications in both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. But, what exactly does this mean, and why would an individual want these certifications?

A Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification validates skills within the different programs in the Microsoft Office Suite. These include: Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio and Word. For students that are completing their high school education, these certifications can bolster their resume, help them stand out from other job applicants, increase earning potential, and in general, prepare our students for a more successful future. To earn the certification, students must pass a proctored and timed exam created by Microsoft. It’s very challenging, and most students do not pass on their first attempt.

All of our students who achieve certification get a digital badge that can be displayed in resumes, emails, and social media profiles. At Denver’s North High School, four KidsTek students in our class have earned the Microsoft Word Certification, and we currently have a number of students working toward earning Microsoft Excel Certifications.
