How do you teach PowerPoint to a six-year-old? Simple.
First, kick off class by thinking of an animal that starts with the first letter of your name. Mario the Mouse. Karianne the Kangaroo. Then, go to a computer and click on the big orange-y “P”. Type your name in the first slide. Add another slide and click on “Insert.” Search for a picture of your animal in clip art. Later, change your background colors or design, add pictures of your favorite food or explore the tab bar for more fun ideas.
It sounds like second nature to many adults, but Ms. Lindsay Norwood’s first graders are catching on quickly. Lindsay’s classes at Fletcher and Vaughn elementary schools in Aurora are learning the basics of Microsoft Office by creating fun projects in Word and PowerPoint. Michelle Lovato teaches similar lessons at Aurora’s Sable Elementary. As they move through elementary school, our students build their skills so they can create more advanced Office and multimedia projects in middle school. KidsTek teaches in all seven of the City of Aurora’s COMPASS elementary and middle after school programs.
