KidsTek’s Business Computing class from North High School took a field trip to FORTRUST Data Center on November 8. This trip was special because the students got to meet the KidsTek board members before they joined a tour of the data center. The KidsTek board was having a scheduled meeting at FORTRUST, and the our students arrived near the end of their meeting.
The students engaged in a conversational ice breaker activity with the board and had the chance to have a lengthy conversation with individual board members. Our business computing class at North is unique because of our emphasis on teaching soft skills, including networking, to our students. The interaction with our board was an opportunity to reinforce some of those skills, and learn about the function of a non-profit board of directors.
Kristina Calvert, Program Specialist for the class at North High School said, “It was an exciting conversation opportunity for the students to practice communication and soft skills while also exploring different careers related to the technology industry. Students were able to talk one-on-one with business professionals to learn about what they do, and why they volunteer their time with KidsTek. In addition, the students toured the data center and learned about cloud computing and colocation.”
