With the recent wrap-up of the 2013-2014 school year, it’s been a good time for us to reflect on the many exciting opportunities that have come our way and that we’ve provided for children in our programs. Here are some of the highlights from the past school year:
Our students were truly an amazing group of hard-working and inspiring young individuals this year. Those with passing grades in our high school classes were awarded new laptops courtesy of Comcast! Juan Vargas-Murillo, of North High School, earned Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications in both Word and Excel. Juan also earned the Excellence in Technology Student of the Year award from North High School.
We are very fortunate to be able to give the Nancy J. Sauer Memorial Scholarship to one deserving high school senior every year. This year’s winner is Nin Aung of Aurora Central High School! Nin’s academic achievement, perseverance and uplifting spirit were just a few of the reasons she won the scholarship, and we’re honored to know her!
We greatly expanded our reach into new schools and new school districts. We worked with Ryan and Pioneer Elementary Schools in Lafayette by partnering with the I Have a Dream Foundation. We held great programs this spring at DCIS at Fairmont Elementary School in Denver– DCIS (Denver Center for International Studies) is a very innovative school model focusing on foreign language acquisition and cultural studies. We had a fun and full after school program at Pennington Elementary School in JeffCo. We served middle school students with audio production projects at STEM Launch School in Thornton. And, we piloted a program at Adams City High School in Commerce City!
Students from North High School visited some great tech companies in downtown Denver: Fusion Box and Carbon8. Students from our high schools in Aurora went on trips to Cisco Systems Englewood and a tour of the Fortrust Data Center in Denver. All of these trips helped our students to visualize a rewarding career in the tech sector.
Such a great school year for KidsTek students! We can’t wait to return to our awesome host schools in the fall!
