Another year has come and gone here at KidsTek, and we’ve been fortunate to host many programs, partnerships, and some new faces during 2014. Here’s a look back at our past year.
In February, KidsTek hosted its 13th annual Tech Leaders Dinner at the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management on the DU campus. We were honored to have Belen De Leon of 9News as our emcee for the evening.
On June 9th, KidsTek held its 13th annual Charity Golf Classic at the Inverness Golf Club in Englewood. Over 25 companies were represented on the course. Our post-tournament reception included the presentation of this year’s Nancy J. Sauer Memorial Scholarship, awarded to Aurora Central High School graduate Nin Aung, who spoke via video. Another KidsTek student, Juan Vargas of Denver’s North High School, was on hand to collect a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification.
On June 13th, fifteen of our top high school grade-earners joined employees from Westcon Group, Inc. during their annual Sales Kick Off event at the Westin Hotel in Westminster. Each student received a generous bag of tech goods including an Amazon Kindle!
In August, we had the opportunity to take part in the 2nd Annual “SIM Tank” event that took place at the Galvanize entrepreneur workspace. For the second year in a row, KidsTek was a beneficiary of the event, receiving a $20,000 donation from SIM’s fundraising efforts! Clara Tran, from High Tech Early College, spoke at the event about entering her fourth year as a KidsTek student and how she will soon be off to college to earn a degree in computer enginerering.
In April, students from KidsTek’s business computing class at North High School enjoyed a field trip to two Denver tech businesses—Fusionbox and Carbon8.
Later that same month, KidsTek computer networking classes from our Aurora high school sites visited Cisco System’s Englewood office and Fortrust’s Denver data center.
On October 16th, our students from Hinkley High School were able to take a field trip to a ViaWest data center located in Aurora.
In November, Fortrust hosted another visit at their Denver data center for students from Adams City High School and High Tech Early College.
New School Partnerships
During the spring, KidsTek added programs at five new school sites located in four additional school districts!
These schools included:
– Ryan Elementary and Pioneer Elementary in the Boulder Valley district
– Pennington Elementary in the JeffCo district
– STEM Launch K-8 in the Adams 12 School District
– and Adams City High School in the Adams 14 district
Also this past spring, KidsTek partnered with the COMPASS program in Aurora to teach our first-ever parent computing class in the evenings at Vaughn Elementary School!
At the beginning of the new school year this fall, KidsTek added two additional programs in the Denver Public Schools: Centennial Elementary School and Strive Excel Preparatory High School.
Our newest program began in November at Fulton Elementary School in Aurora where students are enrolled in an introduction to iPads class!
During the first week of July, North High School and High Tech Early College were invited downtown to the office of Swiftpage to take part in a “Swiftie U.” tech camp designed just for KidsTek students. Swiftpage employees taught students about technology, business and marketing concepts, and the week culminated a marketing project competition where Swiftpage awarded college scholarship money to all the students who took part in the camp!
Throughout July, KidsTek had the privilege of once again working with an amazing program known as Aurora Youth 4 Success, founded by State Senator Nancy Todd. AY4S is a summer program for Aurora high school students in the Aurora and Cherry Creek School Districts. This is their 6th year of offering classes, where KidsTek taught our college and career exploration class.
Finally, KidsTek also welcomed two new staff managers this year, Ayesha Ricks as a Program Assistant and Lysa Stewart as a Program Specialist. Both have been wonderful additions to the team!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been a part of helping to serve our KidsTek mission this past year! Our board, staff, community partners, volunteers and donors have made this an impactful and gratifying 2014.
Now it’s time to keep looking forward: Happy New Year from all of us at KidsTek!
