After School Programs Are Essential

Our COMPASS after school classes are in full swing again in the new school year.  We recently launched our eighth year of being a program provider for the COMPASS program.  COMPASS (Community of Many Providing After School Success) is a partnership between the City of Aurora and Aurora Public Schools.  KidsTek is fortunate enough to provide classes at COMPASS’s five middle schools and four elementary schools.
The COMPASS program started in order to create more after school opportunities in a safe atmosphere for Aurora students. COMPASS has four main goals: Build life skills through the 40 Developmental Assets framework, improve academic performance through a combination of academic and enrichment experiences, strengthen community collaboration between all stakeholders for student success, and provide an opportunity for children to make new friends, learn new skills and explore new interests.  As a COMPASS provider, we help to reach these goals by creating a structured and safe educational environment where our instructors provide fun and engaging computer projects!
According to the Colorado After School Alliance, 17% of Colorado’s school-aged children are alone and unsupervised during the hours after school.  After school programs like COMPASS have been shown to improve academic achievement, relieve the stresses on working families, increase students’ self-esteem while decreasing behavioral problems.
We are proud to be a provider for a program making a difference in the lives of students in the Aurora community, and we look forward to another great year of working at all of our wonderful COMPASS sites!
