Mid-Year Review 2009-2010:  A letter from Nancy Sauer, Chair, KidsTek Board of Directors, to the supporters of KidsTek.

A letter from Nancy Sauer, Chair, KidsTek Board of Directors to the supporters of KidsTek:

Dear Friends and Supporters of KidsTek,

We are continuously appreciative of the support our financial partners provide and wanted to share with you our successes during the first half of the school year. KidsTek is committed to providing technology education in after-school programs through project-based learning and our new in-school certification classes. Our fall program has KidsTek making a difference in 12 schools in the Denver and Aurora Public School Districts.

As we reflect on our 2009 highlights, they include over 1,300 students benefiting from diverse technology education including Google Sketch-Up 3-D modeling and a variety of Internet and MS Office based research projects. However, the biggest step this fall was the introduction of our workforce readiness track for high school students including our inaugural Sun technology certification program at Manual High School. Now we offer dual track high school programs including college prep as well as meaningful skills that offer a clear path into the technology community; something both our students and the community can value. Looking back, this summer we completed three summer camp programs, a first for KidsTek.

Please take a minute to read through this short presentation that provides details on our programs and successes. I welcome your calls or e-mails on any questions you have or to talk about KidsTek and the difference we are making.

Best wishes to you and your organizations for a healthy, happy and successful 2010.

Regards,

Nancy Sauer

Chair- KidsTek Board of Directors

KidsTek offers classes at Aurora Youth 4 Success program.  See the video!

KidsTek offered computer classess during the Aurora Youth 4 Success program this past summer at Overland High School in conjunction with the Aurora Youth Collaborative (AYC).

The Aurora Youth Collaborative (AYC) was founded by a group of concerned citizens in Aurora, Colorado that saw the need to create a future “Hope Center” for Aurora that encompasses the resources needed for youth to recreate, study, network, socialize, access computers, develop work force ready skills, health sources, and receive assistance with judicial matters.

Planning is already underway to repeat this program again during the summer of 2010.

Site Director of Google's Boulder office visits KidsTek

Scott Green, the Site Director of Google's Boulder office, visited students at East Middle School in Aurora last week.

The students have recently created "dream houses" using Google Sketch-Up.  Scott was able to review the students' work and then show them other features of the application.  Scott will be returning to Aurora this week to visit South Middle School to review their Sketch-Up projects, as well.

Thanks to KidsTek instructor Meghan Stebbins for leading this wonderful project, and thank you to Scott Green and Google for these valuable visits!

KidsTek Instructor mentioned in "The Business of Changing Lives"

Steve Kessler, KidsTek's most veteran instructor, has been mentioned in a book, "The Business of Changing Lives" by Allan Wells.

The author "describes the unusual business model that enabled [his company] to create the backbone of the Internet-- the same business model he and similar visionaries have used to help low-income youth find high-tech jobs and give inner-city achievers powerful opportunities."

In the book, Steve is noted for both his work at KidsTek, and for his own company, Denver DataMan.

Read Steve's blog post about the book here.

And see the book listed on Amazon.com here.

Congratulations, Steve!

Aurora Youth 4 Success' Program Update

The KidsTek summer class at Overland High School is in its second week.  During the first week of the class, students were treated to guest speakers from College in Colorado and The Colorado School of Mines.  This week, students are focusing on online job-hunting skills and are crafting professional resumes with Microsoft Word.  Next week (the final week of class) students will conduct mock interview sessions with professionals from the business community, and those students with a complete attendance record will be going home with a free refurbished computer at the end of the course.

The students had a number of positive comments about their visit from Jahi Simbai, the Director of Graduate Admissions for the Colorado School of Mines:

"You inspired me to go to college and continue my education after high school."

  • 9th Grade Student

"It’s a good thing you told us about how serious it is to stay focused and keep your target in mind as a goal."

  • 10th Grade Student

"Many people doubt my ability and capability of doing things because of my work ethic, but when you told [me] that I actually have a chance even though I messed my freshman year horribly I actually got some of my self esteem back and I was intrigued by the fact that colleges like [to see] improvement."

  • 11th Grade Student

"The lesson you gave informed many students that were thinking of continuing their education after high school.  Sharing your own experiences about your schooling was very useful for the students, for those who do plan on going to a university know what to expect."

  • 12th Grade Student

KidsTek held daily classes with four rotations at this middle school in Aurora. The program lasted four weeks and completed projects that used MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and digital video.

One student says he plans on returning to our classes next school year because "I have learned a lot of things... and I had lot of fun."

KidsTek held twice-weekly classes at this Aurora middle school in May and June. Students used the Scratch programming environment to create digital stories this summer. KidsTek has been serving students at West for over three years, and this is our first-ever all girls class at this site!

KidsTek worked at the Denver-CAMP program site in June to serve the Denver Public Schools summer students on the eastern side of the district. Students created original stories using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and also learned how to use MS Excel to work with data they researched on the Internet.

KidsTek is joining the "Youth 4 Success" summer program at Overland High School in Aurora this July. This program was started by a coalition including State Representative Nancy Todd in response to a lack of teen facilities in that neighborhood. The KidsTek portion of the program will teach practical computer skills with a focus on college and career exploration. Students will learn how to job hunt online, prepare resumes, and participate in mock interview sessions with volunteers from the business community. We will also have guest speakers from College in Colorado and the Colorado School of Mines. Any student with perfect attendance during this three-week program will receive a free refurbished computer at the completion of the course.
